Proposals are invited on any aspect of language pedagogy through film, media and new technologies in one of the following formats:

  1. Panels, consisting of 3 papers of 20 minutes and a chairperson.
  2. Individual papers of 20 minutes.
  3. Poster presentations of 5 minutes.
  4. Teaching resources presentation of 20 minutes.

 

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following and their interrelations:

1. Second Language Pedagogy and Film:

  • The use of film and media for the teaching and learning of culture and/or second languages
  • Promoting minority cultures and languages through film
  • Multiliteracies / multilinguism, second language learning and film
  • Filmmaking practice in or outside the classroom for second language learning
  • Multimodal approaches of language learning through film
  • Discourse analysis, film and pedagogy
  • Storytelling as a teaching tool

2. Second Language Pedagogy and New Technologies

  • Web 2.0, CMC, virtual environments and/or social media as a pedagogical tool for language teaching
  • E-portfolios in the classroom for language teaching and learning
  • Audio description, captioning and subtitling as a pedagogical tool
  • Re-voicing and dubbing as a pedagogical tool
  • Audio-visual software in the classroom as a pedagogical tool
  • Mobile applications as pedagogical tools for language teaching
  • Video, mobile and console gaming as pedagogical tools for language teaching

 

3. Second Language Teaching Training and Audiovisual Media

  • Language learning and film in Primary, Secondary, Higher or Further Education
  • Language learning and film for adult learners
  • Material development for MFL/EFL with film-based materials
  • Language testing and assessment with film and media
  • Language for specific purposes and audio-visual materials
  • Copyright issues when working with film and other media in the classroom

 

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS

 

  • Individual papers will consist of a 20 minute presentation, followed by 10 minutes of discussion directed by an assigned chairperson. Individual papers will be grouped in sessions of three or four oral presentations. A chairperson will be assigned by the organisers to promote discussion. Proposals for individual presentations should include a 250 word abstract and brief bio-note. Individuals should send all the required documentation together in one single file (Word or PDF format) by email to FLAME@mmu.ac.uk stating in the subject “PAPER PROPOSAL”. Please include 3-5 word tags for your paper. The deadline for submission of individual paper proposals is the 15th of February 2015.

 

  • Panels will consist of three papers and a panel convenor. Presentations will be followed by a 30 minutes group discussion. The panel should stimulate discussion around a particular work or theme. The panel convenor should introduce each speaker, remind speakers of time limits, direct the discussion, keep the dialogue open and prepare a couple of questions for each panellist in case nothing is asked from the audience. Proposals for panels should include a 250 word abstract for each paper, a 50-100 word introduction on the panel theme and how these papers work together, and a brief bio-note for each panel member, including the panel convenor. One representative of the panel should send all the required documentation together in one single file (Word or PDF format) by email to FLAME@mmu.ac.uk stating in the subject “PANEL PROPOSAL”. Please include 3-5 word tags for each paper. The deadline for submission of panel proposals is the 15th of February 2015.

 

  • Poster presentations will consist of the visual presentation of research results or research in progress. Presentations from postgraduate researchers in the first stages of their research are encouraged. Posters should be printed in A3, A2 or A1. A short abstract of between 200 and 400 words should also be included. Poster sessions will consist of presentations of 5 minutes, followed by a group discussion. Proposals for poster presentations should include a 250 word abstract, between 5-10 key words, plus a bio-note of the speaker. Individuals should send all the required documentation together in one single file (Word or PDF format) by email to FLAME@mmu.ac.uk stating in the subject “POSTER PROPOSAL”. The deadline for submission of poster proposals is the 15th of February 2015.

 

  • Teaching resources presentation workshops. We invite presentations of resources and material designed for the language classroom at any level. It consists of one example of worksheet, lesson plan or practical exercise. Each presentation will last 20 minutes, followed by questions. Proposals for teaching resource presentations should include a one page summary of the content, the author and his/her affiliation, the language of study, the level of the lesson, the resources needed, the title of any film or media used and a preliminary structure of the activity. Authors should also include a brief bio-note. Individuals should send all the required documentation together in one single file (Word or PDF format) by email to FLAME@mmu.ac.uk stating in the subject “WORKSHEET PROPOSAL”. Please include 3-5 word tags for your worksheet. The deadline for submission of worksheet proposals is the 15th of February 2015.

Approved presentations will be notified by the 15th of March. The programme will be published shortly afterwards and no later than the 31st of March. Registration will open shortly afterwards.

Up to two fee-waiver bursaries will be available for PGR students to attend and present individual papers or panels at the conference.
